In a terreiro community, the whole street mobilizes for the caruru in homage to the Ìbejì, the twin orishas. Seasonings, songs, dances, and games announce the feast, until the unexpected arrival of Death threatens to interrupt the celebration.
Inspired by the itan of the Yoruba tradition, Fala, Ìbejì is a musical theatre piece for children and young audiences by Cooxia Coletivo Teatral that transforms public space into a terreiro of collective celebration. Between the joy of ritual and the unpredictability of life, the production invites children and adults to celebrate ancestrality and the resistance of Afro-Brazilian traditions.

The Performance
Fala, Ìbejì starts from a choice that runs through the entire production: the street is not a set, it is territory. A territory of encounter, of play, of celebration, and of belonging — and, above all, a democratic place of access to art and culture. Conceived for public space, the staging is built through direct, participatory contact with the spectators, turning the street into a great terreiro of collective celebration.
The story is born from the itans of the Yoruba tradition. A peripheral community prepares to celebrate the caruru in homage to the Ìbejì, the twin orishas, when the unexpected arrival of Death threatens to interrupt the feast. It is in this tension that the performance rises: a celebration that must happen in spite of everything, affirming joy as a gesture of memory and of continuity.
Through songs, dances, games, and plenty of play, the production brings together elements of Candomblé, of Northeastern popular culture, and of the Cosme and Damião festivities, celebrating the ancestrality and the resistance of Afro-Brazilian traditions. The collective’s aesthetic research investigates the universe of popular street markets as a language: their colours, their objects, their dynamics, and their sounds are incorporated into the construction of the scene, contaminating the performers’ bodies and the very landscape of the street.
In the musical score, rhythms such as samba and pagode baiano dialogue with the sounds of the terreiros, creating a festive atmosphere that brings tradition and contemporaneity together. The music does not accompany the scene: it leads the feast, summons the audience, and sustains the poetic tone of the narrative.
The production also investigates Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) as a language of theatrical creation. Fala, Ìbejì is constituted as a fully bimodal performance, in which Libras is incorporated into the acting and the dramaturgy, expanding the possibilities of communication and of artistic expression. The piece is a work that invites children and adults to celebrate life, memory, and the continuity of ancestral knowledge.

Cooxia Coletivo Teatral (Cooxia Theatre Collective) is an artistic group from Salvador, Bahia, that has been developing, since 2015, a trajectory dedicated to the research, creation, production, and circulation of theatrical performances, as well as artistic and cultural training projects. Throughout its work, the collective has consolidated an identity marked by the experimentation of languages, the dialogue with social issues, and the development of research focused on childhoods and youth, with special attention to Afro-centered perspectives. Its repertoire includes works such as Avesso (2016), O Jabuti e a Sabedoria do Mundo (2019), Zumbindo (2021), Flor de Julho (2023), Infinito (2024), and Fala, Ìbejì (2026). Created in partnership with the Fidélis Cia de Dança, the performance Infinito was awarded and toured several regions of Brazil through the Palco Giratório project of Sesc.
In the field of training, the Cooxia has developed projects such as A Cidade que Queremos and Brasil Africano, which promoted theatre workshops for young people, expanding access to artistic training and stimulating processes of creation and expression. The collective also stands out for having organized, over eight years, the Festival Estudantil de Artes Cênicas da Bahia (FESTAC), an initiative dedicated to valuing student artistic production, training new artists, and fostering the exchange of experiences in the performing arts. Through performances, workshops, festivals, and cultural mediation actions, the Cooxia reaffirms its commitment to the democratization of access to culture, the valorization of Afro-Brazilian matrices, and the strengthening of the performing arts in Bahia.
